+De oorsprong van dit object is moeilijk te achterhalen. De eerste geschriften die het gebruik van een dergelijk stuk textiel aanbevelen, dateren van het einde van de 16de en het begin van de 17de eeuw. Het gebruik van de tabernakelsluier hangt immers af van de manier waarop men het Heilig Sacrament en de geconsacreerde hosties bewaart. De middeleeuwse synodale statuten bekommeren zich immers meer over het feit dat de hosties correct beschermd worden op een veilige plaats. Hoe de plaats waar ze zich bevinden geëxploiteerd wordt, varieert dan ook (altaartabernakel, muurtabernakel, sacramentstoren….).
 == Typologie ==
 Gordijn of geheel van gordijnen met symbolische betekenis verwijzend naar de tent uit de Exodus waarin zich de ark van het verbond bevond, symbool voor Gods aanwezigheid. De tabernakelsluier moet de voorgeschreven kleur van de misliturgie hebben ([https://www.paris.catholique.fr/653-Conopee.html|Commission Diocésaine d'Art Sacré, Parijs]). In de 18de eeuw is de tabernakelsluier gewoonlijk samengesteld uit een lambrekijn en één of twee gordijnen, vergelijkbaar met een theatergordijn. Indien hij uitsluitend uit een lambrekijn bestaat, dan bedekt hij enkel de bovenkant van het tabernakel. Als hij uit slechts één gordijn bestaat, is hij soms moeilijk te onderscheiden van een [[monstranssluier]].
