+De monstrans is een voorwerp dat pas laat in de geschiedenis van de liturgische objecten verschijnt. Hij gaat slechts terug tot de 14de eeuw. De oorsprong van de monstrans is te vinden bij het feest van Corpus Christi, waarbij de hostie in triomf werd rondgedragen. Dit feest werd in 1246 in het bisdom Luik ingesteld en in 1264, na het mirakel van Bolsena, door paus Urbanus IV voor de rest van de christenheid. Johannes XXII legde het in 1316 definitief vast.

Hij moet van goud of zilver gemaakt zijn of, als dat niet kan, van verguld messing (''orichalco''). Hij wordt versierd met allerlei afbeeldingen en emblemen maar bovenaan moet er altijd een kruis of een afbeelding van Christus staan. De monstrans heeft een voet met in het midden een knoop.
